ETS Sector

A brief Introduction to the Energy and Environmental Technologies and Services Sector

The global market for Environmental Technologies and Services is diverse and offers great growth potential for regional firms. The world market for environmental goods and services was valued at US$515 billion in 2000 and is forecast to increase to US$688 billion by 2010 representing annual growth of almost 3%. The UK environmental industry has a total turnover of approximately £25 billion, which represents a 4.7% share of world markets.

The majority of Envirolink Northwest's work focuses on several key sub-sectors in the Energy and Environmental Technologies sector, where we have identified particular strengths within the Northwest. To discover more about the Envirolink Northwest offering please click the sub-sector of interest.

The EETS sector is comprised of 14 sub-sectors:

  • Air Pollution Control (APC)
  • Cleaner Technologies and Processes (CTP)
  • Decommissioning/Decontamination of Nuclear Sites (ND)
  • Energy Management/Efficiency (EE)
  • Environmental Monitoring and Instrumentation (EMI)
  • Environmental Consultancy Services (ES)
  • Landscape Services (LS)

Support is available within the non-key sectors, however these are dealt with on an ad hoc basis.

Envirolink Northwest also manages Remade Northwest - a project within the waste management, recycling and technology sector support programme that specifically supports the waste reprocessing and recycling sector by developing sustainable markets for recycled materials and recycled content products. Find out more about this project.

Envirolink Northwest has worked with the DTI and the UK Forum for Environmental Industries, in consultation with the Devolved Administrations, Regional Development Agencies and sector bodies to develop the UK Government Definitions of the Environmental Goods and Services Sector, together with the UK Government Guide to Mapping the Environmental Goods and Services Sector, copies of which can be downloaded from our Publications section.
